Put your creativity and imagination to work and submit your original, unpublished poetry and/or short story to the 2023 Writing Contest!

Age Categories

Youth (9 - 14 years)

Adult (15+)

Submission Categories

Poetry (600 word maximum)

Short Story (1200 - 1800 words)

All submissions must be your original work and cannot have been previously published elsewhere, in print or online (including social media and blogs). The writing contest has an open theme, which means your submissions can be about anything! There is a limit of one submission per category per person. This means you can submit a maximum of one poem and one short story to the contest.

Submission Guidelines:

All entries must be typed in 12 point Calibri font, double spaced. If your writing program does not have this font, please use a similar substitute such as Arial. We are unable to accept handwritten submissions. Do not have any identifying information such as your name included anywhere in the submission. All entries must be emailed to us at circulation@calmarpubliclibrary.ca, with the submission sent as an attached Word Document or pasted into the body of the email itself. Please do not send your submission as a PDF file or shared via Google Docs, Microsoft OneDrive, etc.

In the body of your email, include the following information:

  • Entrant's Full Name
  • Mailing Address
  • Phone Number
  • Email Address
  • Title of Submission
  • Age Category (Youth or Adult)
  • Submission Category (Short Story or Poem)

We cannot accept your entry until we have all of the information listed above!

Please ensure you maintain a copy of your submission for yourself, as entries will not be returned or provided back to participants. You will retain all rights to your submission, and are able to pursue publication of your submission after the contest has ended and winners are selected and announced. By entering the competition, you give the Calmar Public Library permission to display your submission as is deemed appropriate. This includes having your submission printed and placed in a binder at the library that is available for public viewing.
